University of Michigan to pilot hidden grading for freshmen

The University of Michigan is launching a pilot program to hide first-semester letter grades for incoming freshmen in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). Starting in fall 2027, these students will receive transcript designations of only pass (P) or no credit (NC) for their initial term.

University officials stated the initiative aims to address a growing “mental health crisis” on campuses and assist students in transitioning from high school to college. While students will still receive traditional letter grades and feedback from professors during the term, these marks will not appear on official external transcripts or impact overall GPAs.

The university will maintain internal letter grade records for administrative purposes, including financial aid eligibility, academic awards, and advising. The policy has drawn mixed reactions from the student body, with some supporting the reduction of academic pressure and others expressing concern that it may fail to prepare students for future challenges.
