University of Michigan to pilot pass-fail grading for freshmen

The University of Michigan is launching a pilot program to shield first-semester grades from the overall GPAs of incoming freshmen within its College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Starting in fall 2027, the university will implement a pass-fail grading system for these students.

Administrators have publicly framed the initiative as a measure to address a student mental health crisis and allow for freer intellectual exploration. However, internal documents suggest the policy is also intended to address racial “credit gaps” and “intersectional patterns of inequity” in academic performance. University data indicates that Black and Hispanic students have historically experienced lower four-year graduation rates compared to the overall university average.

The policy will be mandatory for all students in the specified college, as officials noted that an opt-in system might lead to perceived stigma regarding the academic abilities of participating students.
