University of Minnesota coach eyes return of Cade Tyson

University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach Niko Medved has expressed strong interest in the return of top scorer Cade Tyson for the 2026-27 season. Tyson is currently seeking an additional year of eligibility through a lawsuit involving the NCAA’s ‘5-for-5 rule.’

The legal challenge stems from the fact that the NCAA’s new rules did not include the class of 2022. Tyson, who averaged 19.6 points per game last season, is pursuing a temporary restraining order to secure a fifth year of eligibility. Medved stated that if the ruling is granted, a roster spot is available for Tyson, noting, “It would be unbelievable to have him back.”

While the timeline remains uncertain due to the court proceedings, Tyson has been working out with the team. Medved emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the player, stating, “He’s got to do what’s best for him.”
