University of Misiones inaugurates chair for Tomás Gutiérrez Alea
A new academic chair dedicated to the work of the late Cuban filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, known as ‘Titón’, has been established in Argentina. Founded under the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Misiones, the chair aims to create a space for reflection and exchange regarding the director’s cinematic legacy.
Cuban actress Mirtha Ibarra, widow of Gutiérrez Alea, signed the agreement with the institution. The initiative seeks to strengthen audiovisual critical thinking and cultural exchange between Latin American and international cinema, with a specific focus on the contributions of Cuban cinematography.
Ibarra, who starred in the Oscar-nominated film ‘Strawberry and Chocolate’ (1993), attended the Oberá Film Festival to participate in the launch and discuss the transformations and challenges facing Cuban cinema.
