University of Mississippi students found dead in separate incidents

Authorities in Oxford, Mississippi, are investigating the deaths of two University of Mississippi students found on Monday. One student was discovered on campus, while the other was found in an off-campus residence.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics reported that packaged kratom, a plant-based substance with stimulant and sedative effects, was found at both scenes. While officials have not confirmed if kratom or any other substance contributed to the deaths, they have issued a warning to the public to avoid unregulated products and substances not prescribed by a trusted source.

The Mississippi State Department of Health has also cautioned residents against the risks of counterfeit pills and unregulated psychoactive products, noting that professional packaging does not guarantee safety or consistent ingredients.

University officials expressed heartbreak over the loss and urged the community to avoid spreading unverified information on social media. Investigations into the specific causes of death are ongoing, with toxicology results pending.
