University of Mississippi students found dead amid kratom investigation

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two University of Mississippi students, Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20. Hamilton was found in a campus dormitory, while Strang was found at an off-campus residence.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics reported that packaged kratom, an herbal substance, was found at both scenes. While officials have not confirmed a direct link between the substance and the deaths, a drug task force has urged the public to avoid kratom as a precaution.

In a related development, police arrested two men in Oxford for possession with intent to distribute after a raid on a local smoke shop uncovered over 500 units of kratom and other suspected narcotics. Investigators are working to determine if the products found at the retail location are connected to the deaths. Toxicology reports are expected within weeks to determine the official cause of death.
