University of Málaga develops magnetic nanoparticle diagnostic technology

A multidisciplinary scientific team from the University of Málaga has developed a new diagnostic technology using magnetic nanoparticles to identify allergies to betalactam antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and penicillins. The technology utilizes 30nm particles with an iron oxide core and a silica shell, which act as tiny magnets to capture IgE antibodies in a patient's blood more efficiently than conventional methods.

This in vitro diagnostic platform aims to reduce false positives and negatives. Researchers noted that penicillin allergies are often overdiagnosed, with estimates suggesting that while 8% to 25% of the population claims to be allergic, only 1% to 10% actually are. The research, published in the journal ‘Materials Today Bio’, involved collaboration between the University of Málaga, IBIMA Plataforma BIONAD, the Inflammatory Diseases Network (REI), and the Málaga University Regional Hospital.

Beyond medical diagnostics, the development of these magnetic nanoparticles—which can be controlled or moved via magnetic fields without direct contact—holds potential applications in electronics, energy, and materials engineering.
