University of Modena spearheads OneHealthDrugs project across 54 nations

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia coordinated the European OneHealthDrugs COST Action for four years, managing a €832,000 grant. The initiative brought together more than 1,000 scientists from 54 countries to develop drugs that are effective for humans and animals while minimizing environmental harm.

Key outcomes include a series of patents, peer‑reviewed publications and several new drug candidates, especially antiparasitic agents. The project employed AI‑guided predictive tools and novel ecotoxicology assays to create more selective, low‑impact medicines. Over 150 meetings—16 in person—were held, involving 370 participants, and a final conference in Brussels highlighted the university’s central role in advancing sustainable pharmaceutical research.
