University of Montenegro joins ROMANICA project to preserve Roman heritage
The ROMANICA project, titled ‘Roman heritage in the cross-border region – connecting past and present’, has launched to enhance the protection, digitalization, and presentation of Roman cultural heritage across the Adriatic region. The initiative involves the University of Montenegro as a partner alongside five institutions from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
Co-financed by the Interreg VI-A IPA CBC Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro program, the project is scheduled to run until June 2028. It aims to strengthen the research capacities of the Archaeology Center at the University of Montenegro by providing modern equipment for land and underwater archaeological research, as well as 3D documentation.
A significant outcome of the project includes opening the Roman baths in the Old Town of Budva to the public. This makes a key segment of Montenegro’s cultural heritage accessible to citizens and tourists for the first time since its discovery 40 years ago.
