The University of Montenegro (UCG) has officially opened the call for elections to select a new rector for the 2027–2030 mandate. The UCG Governing Board issued the decision to initiate the process on September 2, following the new Law on Higher Education and the university's Statute.

Only full professors currently employed at the institution are eligible to apply, and candidates must submit a development program for the upcoming term. The current rector, Vladimir Božović, is set to complete his term in August 2025. An Election Commission, led by Aleksandra Vuksanović Božarić, has been established to manage the procedure.

The announcement has coincided with public debate regarding the election model. Approximately seventy professors have signed an initiative calling for more immediate elections, arguing that the current system, where the Senate proposes candidates and the Governing Board makes the final decision, concentrates power among too few voters. In response to these concerns, the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Science, Culture and Sport has scheduled a thematic session.

The UCG Senate has issued a formal statement calling on all external parties and participants to refrain from applying improper pressure or influence on university bodies and the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
