University of Mumbai law college intake reduction upheld by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a plea that challenged the University of Mumbai’s decision to reduce student intake by 50 percent in affiliated law colleges for the 2026-27 academic year.
The decision upholds a previous ruling by the Bombay High Court, which had rejected the challenge and suggested the litigation might have been a proxy for an affected institution. While the Supreme Court maintained the dismissal of the petition, it set aside a 1 lakh rupee cost previously imposed on the petitioner, Lawyers’ Foundation, following an assurance from the group that it would avoid filing frivolous petitions in the future.
The university’s plan involves cutting the sanctioned capacity for both three-year and five-year LLB courses across approximately 45 affiliated colleges.
