University of Nebraska–Lincoln earns Carnegie sustainability classification

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has become one of the first 14 institutions in the United States to receive the new Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability. The university participated in a 2025 pilot program involving 21 colleges and universities, helping to refine the framework, application process, and review criteria for the official launch of the classification.

The designation recognizes institutions that successfully integrate sustainability into their curriculum, research, operations, career preparation, and community engagement. The classification is hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder in partnership with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education.

University officials noted that the achievement was a campuswide effort, documenting sustainability initiatives across classrooms, laboratories, residence halls, and offices. Morgan Hartman, sustainability manager in the Office of Sustainability, stated that the recognition reflects the dedication of the university's students, faculty, and staff toward responsible resource stewardship.
