University of Nebraska–Lincoln to celebrate new Mesonet weather stations

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 23 to celebrate the completion of 35 new, state-of-the-art Nebraska Mesonet weather stations. The expansion was funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and aims to fill critical observation gaps, particularly in the Sandhills region.

Nebraska’s network of 104 mesonet stations provides essential data for agriculture, natural resource management, emergency services, and fire containment. The stations monitor variables such as air temperature, rainfall, humidity, soil moisture, heat and cold stress, crop water use, and wildfire risk.

The public event will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. at the East Campus mesonet station, which serves as the network’s flagship site for testing improvements and educational purposes. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a station up close and interact with Mesonet staff.
