QS World University Rankings 2027 reveals global university standings

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its 2027 World University Rankings, evaluating 8,808 institutions from 106 education systems. The United States retains the top spots with MIT ranked 1 for the 15th consecutive year, Imperial College London and Stanford sharing 2, Oxford 4 and Harvard 5. The top‑10 also features institutions from the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Singapore.

Regional highlights show strong gains across Asia, Latin America and Europe. Taiwan placed four universities in the top 200, with National Taiwan University reaching a historic 54th place. Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires held its lone spot among the world’s top 100 at 84, while India expanded to 52 institutions in the list, led by IIT Delhi at 118. Egypt entered six universities into the top 1,000. Hong Kong’s five universities remained in the global top 100, with the Chinese University of Hong Kong rising to 18. Italy is the only major EU system posting net growth, with the Politecnico di Milano climbing to 87 and fifteen Italian universities now in the top 500. Spain’s Universidad de Vigo entered the 801‑850 band, and the Arab region saw KFUPM reach the top 100 for the first time.

The rankings, which weigh research impact, employer reputation and internationalisation, are being used by governments and institutions to shape funding, attract talent and guide strategic reforms in higher education worldwide.
