University of Newcastle students question AI-delivered lectures

Students at the University of Newcastle have expressed concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence to deliver course content. In an Introduction to Programming course, students were notified that some lecture material would be presented via a digital AI avatar modeled after the course coordinator’s image and voice.

The university stated that these AI-generated videos are intended to demonstrate “real-world applications” of technology. To supplement the digital content, the course will maintain in-person labs and live online sessions where students can interact directly with the coordinator.

Some students have raised issues regarding the effectiveness of the medium, citing potential difficulties with engagement and the monotone nature of AI avatars. While acknowledging the rapid growth of AI in education, students have suggested that providing options for human-led instruction remains important.
