University of Newcastle unveils Mark and Kirralee Hughes Sports Common

The University of Newcastle has officially unveiled a new multi-sport arena named the Mark and Kirralee Hughes Sports Common. The facility is the first of its kind in Newcastle, featuring two upgraded turf fields and all-weather courts for sports including netball, pickleball, tennis, hockey, and futsal.

The precinct is named in honor of Mark Hughes, a two-time premiership winner with the Newcastle Knights, and his wife Kirralee. The couple established a foundation following Mark's brain cancer diagnosis in 2013. University vice-chancellor Alex Zelinsky stated that the naming recognizes their significant contribution and advocacy within the region.
