University of Niš Senate to consider Faculty of Serbian Studies status

The Faculty of Serbian Studies at the University of Niš is facing a legal dispute regarding its operational status. A proposal to amend the University Statute to recognize the faculty as a legal entity is set to be presented to the University Senate.

The Faculty of Serbian Studies was established by a decision of the Serbian Government in November 2025, following the separation of the departments for history, Serbian studies, and Russian language and literature from the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš. While the University's Committee for Statutory Issues has given a positive opinion on the amendment, the institution's legal status remains contested.

The dispute follows a decision by the Ministry of Education to revoke operating licenses for the history, Serbian studies, and Russian language programs at the Faculty of Philosophy. Although the Administrative Court has stayed the execution of the Ministry's decision, the Ministry has instructed the University of Niš to proceed with the implementation of the government's decision to establish the new faculty.
