University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital addresses suspected diphtheria case
The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, is addressing concerns regarding a suspected case of diphtheria following the death of a patient. Hospital management has urged the public not to panic and to continue accessing healthcare services, stating that clinical activities remain uninterrupted.
While initial reports suggested a diphtheria outbreak, a post-mortem clinical review indicated the condition may have been severe pharyngotonsillitis with massive exudate rather than diphtheria. Despite this, the hospital has implemented precautionary measures, including contact tracing and providing prophylaxis to individuals who had contact with the patient.
Dr. Charles Nonyelum, the Chief Medical Advisory Committee, confirmed that the patient passed away two days after admission. Hospital officials emphasized that staff are equipped with necessary protective gear and that the facility has the capacity to manage infectious disease emergencies should a confirmed case emerge.
