University of North Carolina holds Montross Day of Service

The Montross Day of Service, an annual event organized by the Rams Club to honor the late Eric Montross, saw significant growth in 2026. Held on September 23 to coincide with Montross’s birthday, the initiative commemorates the former athlete who passed away in December 2023 after a battle with cancer.

Supported by athletic director Steve Newmark, the number of participating Tar Heel teams tripled compared to 2025. The event involved over a dozen organizations across Chapel Hill. Activities included the football program utilizing the Kenan Football Center as a logistics hub, the softball team volunteering at local recreation practices, and the women’s basketball team organizing a Make-a-Wish celebration for a young patient.
