University of North Carolina settles federal probes into discrimination

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has reached a voluntary settlement with the Trump administration to resolve 18 active federal investigations and a Department of Justice compliance review. The probes focused on allegations of antisemitism and race-based discrimination on campus.

Under the agreement, which remains effective until the end of 2028, the university will not pay a monetary settlement and does not admit to any wrongdoing or liability. The deal ensures UNC maintains its eligibility for federal funding. To address the allegations, the university will appoint a Merit & Civil Rights Administrator and establish a Title VI Coordinator position within its compliance office. Elizabeth Hall, associate vice chancellor for university compliance, has been appointed to oversee these roles and serve as the point of contact for the Department of Justice.

The settlement also mandates antisemitism training for students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, the agreement prohibits the use of face masks or other coverings intended to conceal an individual's identity during protests. UNC Chancellor Lee H. Roberts stated that the resolution affirms the civil rights of the community and protects the university's mission.
