University of North Dakota hockey celebrates record 2026 NHL Draft haul

The University of North Dakota (UND) marked a historic weekend at the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo, New York, with eight players selected over the two days – the most for the program in the modern draft era (2005‑present). Selections included forward Markus Ruck (39th overall, Pittsburgh Penguins), defenseman Ethan MacKenzie (69th, Toronto Maple Leafs) and forward Connor Davis (129th, Vancouver Canucks), among others, bringing the total of current or incoming Fighting Hawks on NHL rosters to eight.

Separately, top defense prospect Keaton Verhoeff, who chose to play college hockey at UND over junior routes, was taken ninth overall by the San Jose Sharks. Verhoeff’s decision sparked discussion about the risk‑reward balance between college and junior development, but the UND coaching staff highlighted his successful freshman season and role in the team’s Frozen Four appearance.
