University of Northampton introduces race equity training for students

The University of Northampton has introduced an e-learning course titled ‘Introduction to Race Equity’ as part of its induction process for new students. Provided by the membership organization Advance HE, the course includes a module titled ‘Whiteness, Privilege and Belonging.’

In this module, students are asked to reflect on whether they are aware of how ‘White privilege operates and the impact it has on staff and students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.’ Participants are also asked to identify actions they can take to ‘improve anti-racist practice’ and ‘tackle race inequality.’

A spokesperson for the university stated that inclusivity is a core value and that the training is an ‘industry standard course’ designed to encourage reflection. The university clarified that the course is not mandatory, can be completed anonymously, and that non-completion will not prevent students from starting their studies or moving into university accommodation.

The Free Speech Union has criticized the initiative, suggesting that even if the course is not compulsory, it signals the university’s stance on politically contested issues and may create an environment where students feel pressured to conform to specific viewpoints.
