University of Northern British Columbia launches new PhD in Engineering

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is launching a new Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering this fall. This marks the institution's first new doctoral program in over 15 years.

The research-intensive program is designed to address engineering challenges specific to northern, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Research areas include sustainable buildings, clean water, resilient transportation infrastructure, and the responsible management of natural resources.

Jessie Sunner, the minister of post-secondary education and future skills, noted that the program aims to strengthen British Columbia's reputation for research and innovation while attracting graduate students and researchers to the northern region. UNBC interim president Dr. Bill Owen added that the program will provide opportunities for advanced scholarship in areas of strategic importance to both the North and Canada.
