University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) computer science assistant professor Shruti Chandra led a study in the summer of 2025 that deployed a humanoid robot across seven summer camps. Graduate student Ramin Kupaei coordinated development of the system together with undergraduate students Piyush Daryanani, Mohammad Olaniyan and Anupriya Shaju. Over two months the robot interacted with roughly 150 children aged six to twelve, delivering ten game‑based learning activities tailored to developmental stages.

The UNBC press release reported that the children generally accepted the autonomous social robot and that the study revealed age‑specific differences in engagement. It also identified practical challenges such as maintaining children’s attention, timing of interactions, and technical robustness in real‑world settings. The findings were co‑authored by the research team and presented at the 21st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human‑Robot Interaction.
