University of Nottingham researchers estimate 36 potential extraterrestrial civilizations

Researchers at the University of Nottingham, led by astrophysics professor Christopher Conselice, have estimated that approximately 36 intelligent civilizations could potentially be contacted within our galaxy. The study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, utilized the Copernican principle of mediocrity and the Drake equation to assess how many planets in the Milky Way possess the necessary conditions to support life similar to Earth.

The research suggests that the search for extraterrestrial intelligence serves as a metric for the longevity of our own civilization. Finding common intelligent life would imply that civilizations can endure for long periods, whereas a lack of active civilizations would suggest risks to long-term survival.

While scientific data currently lacks conclusive proof of life beyond Earth, the fundamental elements required for life are common throughout the cosmos. The current lack of contact may be attributed to the vastness of space, the rarity of intelligent life, or the limited duration of technological civilizations.
