University of Novi Sad researchers develop biological pest control for hazelnut orchards

Researchers from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Novi Sad are developing a biological control model to protect hazelnut orchards from the invasive stink bug, Halyomorpha halys. The project, part of the AgroStart2026 program, aims to reduce reliance on chemical insecticides by utilizing natural predators.

The proposed method involves inter-row sowing of Phacelia tanacetifolia, a honey plant rich in nectar and pollen. Students Milan Čović and Ivan Fijat, mentored by Professor Aleksandra Konjević, found that beneficial insects and parasitoids are attracted to these nectar-rich flowers, which could create a more favorable environment for natural pest control within the orchards.
