University of O'Higgins and Sernageomin to map volcanic hazards in central Chile

The University of O'Higgins (UOH) is partnering with Chile's National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) to develop volcanic hazard mapping for central Chile. This collaborative research involves UOH academics Laura Becerril and Jorge Romero, along with geological engineering students and professionals from the National Volcanic Surveillance Network.

Currently, central Chile lacks comprehensive volcanic hazard mapping. While regions like O’Higgins contain volcanoes such as Tinguiririca and El Palomo—which currently show low to moderate eruptive danger and low immediate probability of eruption—experts warn that the lack of existing studies could lead to an underestimation of potential impacts during future reactivations. The project aims to provide the necessary data for accurate hazard assessment and risk management in a volcanic zone that has historically experienced significant eruptions but lacks sufficient contemporary research.
