University of Oslo research finds users develop real emotions for chatbots

Research from the University of Oslo suggests that some individuals develop emotional bonds with AI chatbots that feel as real as human relationships. A doctoral thesis by Marita Skiube, from the university’s Department of Psychology, examined 50 people who had formed close ties with Replika, a social chatbot designed to act as a friend, advisor, or romantic partner.

Participants reported discussing everything from daily hobbies to highly personal matters, including traumatic experiences and sexual fantasies. Many users felt a sense of security, believing the AI would not judge them in ways humans might. The study noted that the constant availability and affirming nature of these chatbots can significantly strengthen emotional connections.

However, researchers and mental health experts warn of privacy risks, noting that the companies behind these services can store highly sensitive personal information shared during these intimate interactions.
