University of Oxford researchers identify early Parkinson's damage mechanism

Researchers at the University of Oxford have identified a mechanism by which the protein Alpha-Synuclein may damage nerve cells in Parkinson's disease patients earlier than previously understood. The study, published in Nature Communications, reveals that even small accumulations of this protein can disrupt essential transport pathways within the endoplasmic reticulum.

These protein clumps appear to block a molecular gate, specifically involving the protein Sec61A, which interferes with the cell's ability to transport newly formed proteins and manage cellular waste disposal. This disruption primarily affects dopamine-producing neurons, which are critical for controlling movement. The research team utilized human stem cell-derived neurons and brain tissue from deceased patients to observe these early-stage protein changes.
