University of Paderborn launches new Benelux Studies center

The University of Paderborn has launched a new working group dedicated to ‘Benelux Studies’ to consolidate research, teaching, and knowledge transfer regarding the Benelux region (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg).

Led by Professor Sabine Schmitz of the Belgium Center (BELZ) and Professor Johannes Süßmann of the Historical Institute, the initiative aims to address the relatively low level of attention the Benelux Union receives in Germany as a distinct cultural space. The center will focus on history, culture, politics, and economics, exploring themes such as cultural transfer, identity, multilingualism, and cross-border cooperation.

The new position builds upon existing structures, including the BeneluxNet digital platform and the interdisciplinary BeNeLux-Studien Master’s program. It seeks to support students through practical projects, internships, and research while providing scientific insights into regional transformation processes for both academic and public use.
