University of Palermo climbs 200 places in ARWU global rankings
The University of Palermo has significantly improved its standing in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). According to the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the institution climbed approximately 200 positions globally, moving from the 701-800 bracket in 2025 to the 501-600 range.
This advancement is attributed to the increased international prestige and quality of scientific production by its faculty and researchers. Key drivers for this ascent include a high score in the Highly Cited Researchers (HiCi) indicator and increased publication rates in elite journals such as Nature and Science.
University Rector Massimo Midiri stated that the result confirms the growth path the institution has undertaken in recent years. The university also maintains strong positions in other global rankings, including QS (801-850) and Times Higher Education (501-600). Specific disciplines showing global excellence include Mathematics, Water Resources, Agricultural Sciences, Medical Technology, and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.
