University of Patras draws 168 applications from 23 countries for new English-language medical program

The University of Patras in Greece has received 168 applications from 23 countries for its upcoming English‑language undergraduate medical program, which is slated to begin on 29 September 2026 with an initial cohort of about 50 international students. The strong response is presented by the Ministry of Education as evidence that Greece’s strategy to internationalise higher education is bearing fruit.

Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki met with university rector Christos Bouros to discuss the programme and broader development plans. The ministry has earmarked €14 million for infrastructure upgrades at the university, including a €4 million allocation for the student restaurant and facilities, and an additional €10 million from the 2026‑2030 Development Programme. As part of the internationalisation drive, three joint master’s programmes are being launched in partnership with the University of Nicosia, Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Delaware.
