University of Pécs dean resigns amid doctoral school controversy

Gábor Szécsi has stepped down from his position as dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Pedagogical Studies and Rural Development at the University of Pécs (PTE), effective August 31. Szécsi, who was serving his second term with a mandate originally lasting until late 2026, cited conflicts and a tense institutional atmosphere surrounding the Philosophy Doctoral School as reasons for his departure. While the university stated his resignation was due to personal reasons, Szécsi noted he is moving to another institution following a prior request.

The resignation follows allegations made by philosopher Tamás Barcsi, who published an open letter calling for an investigation into the Philosophy Doctoral School. Barcsi alleged that the school facilitated PhD degrees and scholarships for individuals based on political affiliations rather than scientific merit. He further claimed the school lacked necessary scientific conditions and faced accreditation issues, noting that no new students have been admitted since 2023.

The University of Pécs has confirmed that investigations have been launched regarding the doctoral school's accreditation and specific doctoral procedures. Zoltán Koltai will serve as acting dean until a new permanent leader is appointed, a process expected to conclude by the end of 2026.
