University of Porto study links bacteria to psychopathy traits

Researchers at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) at the University of Porto have identified associations between specific gut and oral bacteria and psychopathy traits, such as impulsivity, emotional callousness, and antisocial behavior.

The study, led by Carolina Costa and coordinated by Benedita Sampaio-Maia, observed relationships between certain bacterial profiles and behavioral characteristics. While the researchers noted that the study does not demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship, it adds to existing evidence regarding the link between microorganisms and brain function.

Additionally, the team found differences in substances within stool samples, specifically glucose and taurine, which were associated with higher levels of these psychopathic traits. The findings may eventually assist in identifying biological markers for mental health or developing interventions involving diet and probiotics.
