University of Professional Studies, Accra launches laptop assembly plant

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has launched a laptop assembly plant designed to bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical technical skills. The facility, located at the AFOA ATA Building, aims to provide students with hands-on experience in assembling, maintaining, and repairing computing devices, as well as learning about motherboards, software development, and artificial intelligence integration.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor stated that the initiative seeks to integrate technology into teaching and learning while encouraging local production. The plant currently has a production capacity of 1,000 laptops per week. The university aims to commercialize operations and intends to produce 30 percent of the device components locally within the next three years.

In a new academic model, UPSA announced that newly admitted students will be required to assemble their own laptops, which they can then use and pay for through a financing stream. The project is supported by technical partner Mind Dey Talent and IT Co. Ltd. The facility is also equipped with an S-ray machine for fault detection and will offer warranty and after-sales services.
