University of Providence to close in Montana by August 2027

The University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana, has announced it will cease educational operations at the conclusion of the 2026–2027 academic year. The Board of Trustees voted to close the private Catholic institution following a declaration of financial exigency earlier this year.

University leaders cited declining enrollment and increasing financial pressures as the primary drivers for the decision. Despite efforts to restructure academic programs, reduce operating expenses, and pursue new revenue strategies, the institution was unable to establish a sustainable long-term operating model. Board chair Terry Cosgrove noted that additional setbacks, including accreditation probation related to financial sustainability and the loss of authorization to serve online students in several states, further narrowed the university's options.

The final day of instruction is scheduled for August 20, 2027. While academic and administrative activities will continue past that date to facilitate final grades and academic records, the university’s immediate priority is assisting students in completing their degrees or transferring to other institutions. Although the university has no debt, officials stated that increased tuition revenue from higher enrollment was necessary for continued viability.
