Australian researchers develop cyborg cockroaches for disaster rescue
Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed “paraborgs”—cyborg cockroaches designed to assist victims trapped in disaster zones, such as collapsed buildings or caves. Using the North Queensland giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), engineers have equipped the insects with lightweight electronics, cameras, and remotely activated auto-injection systems.
The insects are controlled via electrodes implanted in their nervous systems, allowing researchers to direct their movement through electrical stimulation. In proof-of-concept testing, the cyborgs achieved a 95% success rate for injections when positioned within 15 centimeters of a target. The more complex task, which requires navigating to the target, stabilizing, and performing the injection, was successful in 72% of trials.
Lead researcher Dr. Thang Vo-Doan noted that the goal is to transform cyborg insects from mere mobile sensors into active rescue platforms that can deliver emergency medical care while keeping critical decisions under human control.
