University of Reading study links Vitamin B6 to reduced depression symptoms

New research from the University of Reading suggests that daily high doses of Vitamin B6 supplements may significantly reduce depression symptoms. In a randomized, double-blind trial published in the journal ‘Depression and Anxiety’, participants took a 100mg dose of Vitamin B6 daily for one month.

Those with mild to severe depression showed a reduction in symptoms compared to those receiving a placebo or Vitamin B12. Lead author David Field noted that Vitamin B6 plays a vital role in producing brain chemical messengers, such as serotonin and GABA, which are essential for mood regulation.

While no side effects were reported during this study, Field emphasized that large-scale clinical trials are necessary to evaluate Vitamin B6 as a standalone or adjunctive treatment for depression.
