University of Rochester advances plans for world's most powerful academic laser

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) has received a record $111 million in funding to modernize its operations and ensure the longevity of the OMEGA laser system through the 2040s. The OMEGA system, described as being the size of a football field, utilizes 60 beams to create extreme conditions for scientific research.

Additionally, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is providing $13.7 million to move the NSF Optical Parametric Amplifier Line (NSF OPAL) into its final design phase. This facility, to be constructed at the LLE with participation from UC Irvine researchers, aims to become the world’s most powerful academic laser. Once completed, the NSF OPAL will feature two 25-petawatt lasers that briefly exceed the power of the global power grid by a thousand times.

The project is intended to serve the global scientific community, enabling advancements in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and quantum electrodynamics. Researchers hope to use the facility to study subatomic particle behavior and the conditions of the early universe following the Big Bang.
