University of Roehampton offers esports scholarships to students

The University of Roehampton in the United Kingdom is offering esports scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students who demonstrate both academic progress and excellence in competitive video gaming.

Registrar Mark Ellul stated the program aims to recognize talent in a field of growing global popularity. Scholars are expected to represent the university in weekly tournaments and at in-person events. While the university requires minimum rankings in major games, it also considers applicants with significant followings on streaming platforms like Twitch.

The scholarship amount was recently increased from £1,500 to £2,000 following the team's rising performance and popularity. Former scholar Cameron Dray noted that the financial support was crucial for studying in an expensive city without the necessity of part-time work. Other students, such as racing game specialist Thomas Cole, noted that such unique funding helps reduce financial stress and encourages academic focus.
