University of Salerno inaugurates new astronomical observatory

The University of Salerno (UniSA) has officially inaugurated its new Astronomical Observatory at the Fisciano campus. Located on the roof of Building F, the new dome structure replaces an original 2010 installation that was irreversibly damaged by adverse weather events in 2019.

The new facility features a 6.7-meter diameter dome designed to accommodate at least one full class of students during evening observations. It is equipped with a 60cm diameter robotic telescope, which is noted as the largest of its kind installed within an Italian university campus. The telescope features a 5-meter focal length and is fully automated, allowing for remote management and integration with a weather station to protect equipment during changing meteorological conditions.

University Rector Virgilio D’Antonio stated that the instrument will serve research, teaching, and community outreach. Professor Carmine Attanasio, Director of the Department of Physics, described the project as a significant milestone resulting from a dedicated reconstruction and relaunch effort.
