University of Seoul team to use quantum computing for cardiovascular research
A joint research team comprising the University of Seoul, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, and Flonics has been selected for the ‘2026 Quantum Computing-Based Quantum Advantage Challenge Research Project’ led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
The project aims to utilize quantum algorithms to improve the speed and accuracy of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis for cardiovascular diseases. The research will focus on identifying conditions where quantum computing provides clinical advantages, starting with atrial fibrillation—a common persistent arrhythmia.
Supported by 2.5 billion KRW in government funding, the study will run for 2.5 years through 2028. The research involves developing 3D deep learning segmentation models for the heart, aorta, and left atrium, constructing quantum-based hemodynamic models, and validating results using 4D Flow MRI. The initiative seeks to eventually expand quantum CFD technology to cerebrovascular disease diagnosis and precision medicine.
