University of Siena reports rising medical specialization assignments amid critical shortages

The University of Siena has reported 189 medical specialization scholarships assigned during the first phase of allocation, an increase from 180 last year and 164 two years ago. While the university views this as a sign of growing attractiveness, the total number of available positions has steadily declined from 278 to 263.

Despite the overall increase in assignments, significant vacancies remain in critical areas. Emergency and urgent medicine, essential for staffing emergency rooms, has only filled approximately one out of every three available spots. Other specialties facing low coverage include thoracic surgery, geriatrics, and anesthesia and resuscitation.

Factors contributing to the shortage in emergency medicine include grueling shifts, legal risks, and workplace aggression. In Siena specifically, young doctors have cited the city's geographic isolation and limited transport links as deterrents. While the university expects full capacity following future ranking shifts and reallocations, residency associations urge caution, noting that not all assignees ultimately enroll.
