University of Siena researchers study drought-resistant grapevine rootstocks
Researchers at the Santa Chiara Lab of the University of Siena have completed the first phase of a two-year study aimed at increasing the resilience of viticulture against climate change. The research focuses on identifying specific grapevine rootstocks capable of withstanding water scarcity, rising temperatures, and increased soil salinity.
Using advanced aeroponic laboratories, scientists can monitor root system development under controlled conditions. The study analyzes various rootstocks, including Dod Ridge, 1103 Paulsen, 140 Ruggeri, and Kober 5BB, which serve as the base for popular grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Trebbiano. The experimental base included nearly 3,000 cuttings provided by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo (VCR).
The first phase of experimentation has successfully mapped the physiological, biochemical, and structural parameters that determine drought and salinity tolerance. Key adaptation mechanisms identified include specific root conformations and improved water resource utilization. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Universities of Milan and Padua as part of the National Agritech Center, Spoke 9.
