University of Silesia Rector addresses labor market and regional transformation

Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia, highlights the growing disconnect between academic curricula and the rapidly evolving labor market. He notes that while creating a new field of study can take up to seven years from conception to graduation, certain industries now undergo significant shifts within months.

To remain relevant, universities must move away from mass education toward specialization, quality, and closer integration with the economy. Koziołek emphasizes that while fundamentals like mathematics and language remain essential in the age of artificial intelligence, education must focus more on practical application.

Regarding the transformation of the Silesia region, Koziołek suggests that its success depends on integrating industry, medicine, technology, science, culture, and energy. He argues that the region must actively design its transformation rather than merely reacting to it, noting that the current pace of change in urban spaces, the economy, and lifestyles is occurring within a single generation.
