University of São Paulo awards Doctor Honoris Causa to Gilberto Gil and Cláudia Andujar
The University of São Paulo (USP) University Council has approved the granting of the Doctor Honoris Causa title to musician Gilberto Gil and photographer and activist Cláudia Andujar.
Gilberto Gil, a prominent figure in Brazilian music, was nominated by the School of Communications and Arts (ECA) through the Department of Cinema, Radio and Television. The university recognized his status as one of the most significant cultural personalities of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Cláudia Andujar was nominated by the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC). The honor recognizes her contributions to the arts and human rights, specifically her long-standing defense of indigenous peoples in Brazil.
USP rector Aluisio Segurado stated that the honors recognize trajectories that transcend their respective languages and merge with the cultural and social history of Brazil. Since its inception over 92 years ago, the university has awarded 125 Doctor Honoris Causa titles, the most recent being to journalist Vladimir Herzog in February.
