University of São Paulo to host symposium on aging and social vulnerability
The University of São Paulo (USP) 60+ Program will host a free symposium titled ‘Velhices Invisíveis’ (Invisible Old Age) on August 27, 2026. Held at the Guita and José Mindlin Brazilian Library, the event aims to examine how various forms of inequality influence the aging process in Brazil.
Experts will discuss the longevity and experiences of socially vulnerable groups, including Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and disabled individuals, as well as those living in peripheral areas. The discussions will focus on how socioeconomic factors, environmental conditions, and access to healthcare and security intersect with age-related discrimination.
Egidio Dórea, coordinator of the USP 60+ Program, noted that these groups face a combination of ageism alongside racism, ableism, and LGBTQIA+ phobia. Such overlapping discriminations can limit socioeconomic advancement, hinder healthcare access, and negatively impact physical and mental well-being. The symposium also intends to address the challenges of implementing specific public policies to ensure healthy and dignified aging for these populations.
