Sonora Governor Durazo and Senator Colosio clash over political leadership

A political rift has emerged in Sonora between Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas of Movimiento Ciudadano. The tension escalated following Colosio’s critique in the Senate regarding the federal government’s handling of violence, inequality, and education. Durazo responded by questioning Colosio’s political experience and moral authority, citing his previous tenure as mayor of Monterrey.

Colosio has dismissed the governor’s remarks as provocations, stating that the criticism of the current administration’s performance was accurate and impactful. The dispute carries historical weight, as Durazo previously served as the private secretary to Colosio’s father, the late presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta.

Separately, the administration of Alfonso Durazo is highlighting its infrastructure achievements ahead of its fifth government report. Key projects include the modernization of the Port of Guaymas, improvements to the state’s road network—which has seen an increase in usable roads from 56% to over 85%—and various hospital and educational upgrades.
