University of Sonora union denounces academic workload irregularities

The Academic Workers Union of the University of Sonora (STAUS) has filed a formal complaint with the university rectorate regarding irregularities in the assignment of academic workloads. The union, led by Cuauhtémoc Nieblas Cota, specifically highlighted the case of Esmeralda Velarde Quijas at the Caborca campus.

Velarde Quijas reported that despite meeting all requirements and being a curricular professor, she has been excluded from teaching assignments for the current semester. She stated she has faced repeated denials from the Department of Economic and Administrative Sciences, which claimed there were no available subjects, despite her claims that subjects were available.

STAUS argues that this situation violates the collective bargaining agreement and negatively impacts both the faculty member's ability to earn a salary and the students' access to instruction. The union has requested that Rector Dena Camarena Gómez intervene to regularize the situation and ensure compliance with institutional norms.
