Women outlive men in almost every country but experience higher rates of disability, dementia and other age‑related conditions. To address these gaps, the National Institutes of Health awarded a five‑year, $7.5 million grant to the University of Southern California. The funding establishes the USC Geroscience Specialized Center of Research Excellence on Sex Differences in Aging (GeroSCORE), the first NIH SCORE at USC, and positions the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology as a national leader in this field.
GeroSCORE, funded by the National Institute on Aging together with the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, assembles experts in aging biology, neuroscience, psychology, epidemiology, demography, sociology and data science. Its goal is to uncover how biological sex interacts with genetics, hormones, behavior and social‑physical environments to shape the aging process, ultimately improving disease prevention, independence and healthy longevity. Dean Pinchas Cohen highlighted the center’s interdisciplinary approach, while director Jennifer Ailshire noted that bringing together traditionally separate expertise will help explain why men and women age differently.
